5 tips from a world champion

Wise Words

World Champion, Dame Sarah Storey, provides valuable coaching support to riders on Volta Pro Tours events.
Here are a few words of wisdom from Sarah on how to prepare for a multi day cycling challenge.

1. PLAN

Have a plan and build up your training gradually. It’s never too early to start but leaving it late can cause injury and unnecessary fatigue.

2. PRACTICE

Practice your on and off the bike nutrition strategies as often as you can. Knowing what fuels you and how you best recover will help enormously on the event itself.

3. SOLO & GROUP

Practice solo and group riding as it’s important to be able to concentrate if you find yourself riding alone and the skills of group riding will help the miles pass faster.

4. FOCUS

Focus on gaining fitness rather than losing weight. It’s easy to be fooled that lighter is better but that approach can lead to under fuelling, focus on riding strongly instead.

5. FAZED

Don’t be fazed if you don’t have as much time as friends might have to prepare. Choosing a targeted training approach can be as effective as riding lots of long miles. Prioritising one long ride a week is often sufficient when the other days are well balanced with efforts and power work.
